Secondary Schools Ranking (2021 PSLE Achievement Level Score Cut-Off)

See the latest ranking at: Secondary Schools Ranking 2022.

We have updated our best secondary school ranking list based on the 2021 intake (which is the 2020 PSLE cohort). This is also the first time that achievement level scores are used in the ranking.

MOE has released indicative PSLE score ranges “based on the 2020 cohort’s results and school choice patterns”.

“The indicative scores are the scores of the first and last student who would be admitted into each school under the new scoring system, based on the 2020 cohort’s results and school choice patterns. The PSLE score of the last student is referred to as the school’s cut-off point.”

To derive the ranking, we use the above-mentioned indicative PSLE score ranges, along with the schools’ previous T-Score cut-offs.

If 2 schools have the same achievement level cut-off score (or cut-off point), we further rank them by the lowest indicative score they accept, and then by their last PSLE T-score cut-off points (for 2020 intake).

Note that in the new Achievement Level (AL) system, the lower the overall score, the better.

In our ranking list below, schools offering 6-year programmes, i.e. Integrated Programme (IP) and International Baccalaureate (IB), are highlighted in bold in our ranking list.

Schools under the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) are also indicated. To get into SAP secondary schools, students in the top 30% of the PSLE cohort who take the Higher Chinese subject will be accorded an advantage in the posting. Refer to the list of SAP secondary schools in the section after the ranking list below. As reported in The Straits Times:

“If pupils with the same PSLE score are vying for limited places in the same SAP school, those with better HCL grades – in the order of distinction, merit and pass – will be allocated a place ahead of other pupils.”

Note also that there are some schools with affiliations, which means that pupils from the affiliated primary schools enjoy certain advantage in the posting exercise. For example, if you have a daughter, NYPS arguably offers the most value due to its affiliation with NYGH. The list of secondary schools with affiliations are listed at the bottom of this article (scroll down).

There are also some secondary schools which are affiliated with good JCs. The list is also at the bottom of this article (scroll down).

Also, check out last year’s ranking in our Secondary School Ranking (based on cut-off for 2020 intake) article to see how the schools’ positions have changed.

The previous PSLE T-Scores are shown in brackets.

SAP SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Admission into SAP schools also takes into account the child’s Higher Chinese (HCL) grade. In the list of SAP schools below, the range of indicative scores are included.

HCL Grade: (D) = Distinction, (M) = Merit, (P) = Pass. The HCL grades of the first and last student admitted into SAP schools are reflected in parenthesis. If the first or last student did not take or pass HCL, no HCL grades will be shown. For example, Nan Hua High School’s last admitted student got a total Achievement Level score of 11 and also scored a distinction for HCL. To further understand how this works, refer to the section “Use of Higher Chinese Language (HCL) for admission to SAP schools” on this MOE webpage.
