Graduate Employment Survey 2012 (Published 2013)

20

Fresh lawyers are at the top of the salary ranking table yet again, but this time SMU holds the top two spots, beating NUS by a hair’s breadth. (See our GES ranking for last year.)

Those with medical-related degrees are the next best earners, followed quite closely by those with business-related degrees.

Computing-related degrees fare quite well too.

At the bottom of the table are: Music, Art Design & Media, Chinese Medicine and Nursing.

Data used in this article are based on the 2012 Graduate Employment Survey Results consolidated and released by MOE in early 2013.

Without further ado, we present this year’s ranking:

  3. My son has graduated from NUS Mechanical Engg- CAP 4.05/5 second upper honors CAP this month in June 2013. Applied for about 200 companies since August 2012 till now.Very few interview calls going through many rounds and no end result. Many Mech students are still unemployed. Really pathetic and depressing for these suffering and deserving lot. God save them.

  4. Engineer in Training on

I am appalled to see that engineers are neither well sought after nor valued in Singapore. The rest of the world thinks the world of engineers. It’s mind boggling that those with a degree in economics and business are deemed more valuable than engineers.

  10. -.- Just realized something interesting. For NUS and SMU, graduates are further categorised into “with honours” or “without honours”. E.g. ‘SMU Accountancy (cum laude)’ was ranked no. 7, but ‘SMU accountancy’ was ranked no.43. Obviously the median and average of the top percentile of a certain degree would triumph over the average of the whole cohort. If you want to segregate between those with honours and those without, you should have done it for NTU too. Fairer and more representative rankings please!

  14. The comments here regarding the lower regards held by Singaporeans for engineers is definitely true. I am studying engineering in the UK now, and I can say we as engineers are highly regarded in European society, especially so in countries like Germany where they excel in quality engineering.

Singaporeans need to understand that engineering and technology is crucial if not the most important aspect that we have to develop to be a true high income society. Current popular high earning sectors like finance and banking, put in plain words, are just a form of service industry. Where is the ingenuity?

  17. @Daniel the engineering student on

Engineers are generally not highly regarded here because of the quality of students in the local engineering courses compared to the overseas ones, really.

In the US/UK, students with fantastic high school graduation scores want to apply to engineering, but here in Singapore, it’s often the average or even mediocre students who apply for most of the engineering courses, with the exception of computer, chemical or bio-engineering which are probably the 3 most competitive and sought-after engineering degrees locally right now.

Sad but it’s the truth. A lot of people doing engineering in Singapore are your average joes, who arent doing it out of talent or passion but merely for the options it gives them afterwards (e.g. banking etc.). They can hardly be compared to the top brains in UK/US engineering schools.

Subsequently, little of these “engineers” actually end up innovating or creating successful products. Because to begin with, they are not the same type of creative people you can find in your overseas engin courses.

  19. It is not that hard for fresh grads to get jobs as long as they are willing to accept the lower pays.
But I’d say, there are also those who are fortunate enough to get recommended into companies due to connections.
