Millionaire Hawkers

From 2000 to 2005, Looi San Cheng made $1.05 million in profits from his curry puff business.

But this star hawker-businessman, who was lauded by PM Lee no less at last year’s National Day Rally, made a wrong move by evading tax.

He under declared his income by more than $1 million over the 6 years.

The IRAS prosecutor asked for a sentence that sends a strong deterrent message to the public, and got it.

Looi will be going to jail.

His Tip Top Curry Puff business at Blk 722 Ang Mo Kio Central is still doing well nonetheless. Tip top in fact. And at 6 curry puffs sold every single minute, the New Paper counted. Or about $120k in revenue every month.

Other millionaire hawkers reported in the media include:

  • “Come Daily” Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee at Blk 127 Toa Payoh Lorong 1 #02-27 – $112,500 revenue per month.
  • Kok Kee Wan Ton Noodle at 380 Jalan Besar #01-06 Lavender Food Square – $91,350 revenue per month.
  • Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian at Blk 85 Bedok North Rd #01-07 Feng Shan Hawker Centre – $65,550 revenue per month.

But the champion earners are perhaps Beach Road Prawn Noodle & Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak. Read about these 2 top hawker businessmen.

  1. Pubed, overrated by who?
Since hawker food generally doesn’t give people a sense of belonging or a sense of status (as in donuts in the current craze), I don’t think customers who contribute to these millionaire hawkers’ coffers will want to do so by “overrating” the food. The food must obviously appeal to a large enough crowd to make these hawkers millionaires.
Have you tried their food yourself?

  2. I say good on them! They put in the hard hours and relentless labour of love to provide some exceptional food. The customer always decides and votes through their tastebuds.
