Private Tuition Teacher Makes $520k

Private tutor Phang Yu Hon who gives Physics tuition earned a whopping $520,000 last year. He paid over $85k in taxes.

In a video interview with ST, he said he will be earning even more this year:

“My income has been going up exponentially. So, I think this year it’s going to be even higher. Ka-ching.” (Sound effect in original video 🙂 )

Running his private tuition business in a small unit above a shophouse, he currently has about 200 students and has a website at www.physics.com.sg.

If you are thinking of engaging him to teach your child one-to-one privately, you can’t. He gives only group tuition. With group tuition, he “can take more students at the same time.”

Two years ago, when Sunday Times interviewed him, he was making only $20k a month teaching Physics.

If you are good at teaching and have excellent past academic results to boot, why not give tuition a shot? It may not be uber glamourous, but it can make you richer than you’ve ever been!

  1. I’d be wary of sending my kid to him. Main problem in schools that I find is too many students to one teacher, and his center sounds like the same thing again. I’d like more personal attention for my kid.

But good for him I suppose there is a lack of good teachers in his field.

  2. He is smart guy like most tutors: capitalising on the kiasu-kiasi attitude of Singaporean parents. That is a huge market that only exists here…

  3. I hope he is smart enough to put all the money he earned into properties(when the time is right). No point pouring more money into his tuition business.

Definitely not a good advice. Putting money into a profitable business earns much more than property! Property tycoon doesn’t make money from property (rental or flipping), they make money from operating a business that build buildings!!

  5. Mr Phang is definitely the best physics tutor in Sg. I was his student in 1999/2000, he was already earning 10k at that time doing home tuition.

more attention does not equate to quality time. i run a tuition business and i realise students perform better in smaller groups of 3-10.

    Cheers!
