Higher starting salaries for MINDEF and SAF entrants

14

MINDEF has announced that fresh entrants into MINDEF and SAF will get a higher starting pay.

In its press release, I noted that accountant entrants with good honours degrees get the highest increase (16.1%), followed by management executives with good honours (15.8%). Management executives and accountants are part of MINDEF’s non-uniformed officer scheme, or what they call “DXOs” – Defence Executive Officers.

However, the highest absolute starting pay is still reserved for the uniformed combat military officer entrants. Lieutenants with good honours now get a starting pay of $3,860, about 3.2% up from the previous $3,740.

These are the starting salaries for the MINDEF and SAF entrants, sorted from highest to lowest:

  1. Lieutenant (good honours) – $3,860
  2. Officer Cadet (good honours) – $3,500
  3. Lieutenant (degree) – $3,430
  4. Accountants (good honours) – $3,180
  5. Management Executives (good honours) – $3,080
  6. Officer Cadet (degree) – $2,940
  7. Accountants (degree) – $2,670
  8. Management Executives (degree) – $2,590
  9. Lieutenant (diploma) – $2,520
  10. Lieutenant (A-level) – $2,160
  11. Officer Cadet (diploma) – $2,100
  12. Officer Cadet (A-level) – $1,970

Interestingly, a diploma holder makes more than an A-level holder, by up to $360 for lieutenant entrants. So, if you are quite sure you want to stop schooling 2 to 3 years after your O levels, go to a polytechnic!

  2. what about specs regular pays?

the pay difference between specs and officers is about $400. If sign-on as specs, when you know that being a specs is very hard to make you go far and do study for degree. It is also hard to break the bound even you have $$$.

Specs is like do all the shit works that given from offices, even specs done the work well, they don’t get awarded but his/her office will get awarded and get himself promoted.

Feel like being specs is just for people who want to get a fix life less stress and no need to think about tomorrow type of people should go for it. But the problem is it is only for 10 years. After 10 years i think specs can suffer like hell when they are no more a regular.

  3. Based on FY 2008 budget, MINDEF contributes only $39 mil to government revenue but defence spending is $10.8 bil. In fact, MOE contributes more than MINDEF, with $42.8 mil. This is surprising since MINDEF also owns the defence industries and should thus, contribute more to government revenue. GST contributed $6.2 bil and personal income tax contributed $5.9 bil. Hence, the government revenue from our GST and income tax has all gone towards defence spending.
I’m not sure how much of our GST and personal income tax has really gone into improving the military capability for the defence of Singapore, or has they gone into the pockets of the SAF regulars? When MINDEF propose the SAVER scheme to the SAF regulars in 1998, it promised the SAF regulars a huge sum for their retirement upon their retirement at age of 42. However, a few mths ago it raised the retirement age of SAF regulars to 50 years old. This means that more of our GST and personal income tax will go into the pockets of the SAF regulars.

  4. Hi guys, Im a foreigner. i want to join sg army as spec/trooper. Currently I have a good job w/c gives me fair enough pay (for me its enough). its 2800 if you guys are wondering. 5. Lately I was told by a Naval officer that regular SAF MO make more than RSAF pilots in comparison.

Anyone care to share any truth to that info ?

  6. quite likely, most of the young doctors i know are earning more than the young pilot officers. Somehow, my perception of high salary and pilots don’t work anymore.

Admittedly, I don’t have the data for RSAF pilots.
